Safeguarding Your Personal Info

8 tips to stay safe in cyberspace.

At Vibrant, we do everything we can to keep your records safe. In addition to all our efforts, here are a few things you can do to stay safe online...

  1. Set good passwords. Make your passwords a combo of all the options available to you! Get creative with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters. Length is one of your best defenders! Switch them up often and resist the urge to write them down.
  2. Don't reveal personal information via email. Just because it looks like a trusted contact doesn't mean it is! Look past the contact name and dive directly into the sender's email address to be safe. Sending out personal information online is never a good idea!
  3. Don't download that file! Be careful what you open. Scam tactics are becoming more advanced and can closely mimic well-known contacts. Downloading files can open the gate to harmful software or viruses entering your computer. To protect yourself, make sure you recognize email addresses, don't open questionable attachments, and invest in a powerful up-to-date antivirus program!
  4. Links aren't always what they seem. Think twice before you log into an account from an email link! Email scams are getting more creative by producing phony web pages that may appear to be familiar. Remember, when in doubt, don't click! Type in the URL address you know and trust before logging in.
  5. Stay on top of what you share. Autofill is a pretty handy feature nowadays. But off the top of your head, can you remember all the places you store your payment info? Don't underestimate the importance of being able to retrace your digital footprint. Delete accounts that you no longer use, and remove payment information from them. The more places personal information is stored, the more spots of vulnerability you have!
  6. Take that extra click. Before you move that mouse any further, make sure you sign out! Just because you closed the window doesn't mean you're officially logged out. You could be giving instant access to unwanted users. So take that extra click to protect yourself.
  7. Track your account activity. Stay in the know! Money flows in and out of accounts fast. So keeping an eye on the movement can help you catch any mistakes that could arise. You can even observe on the go! Sign up for mobile banking to check your balances anytime, anywhere.
  8. Review your security. It feels like a pain, but make sure you take the time to assess your security measures regularly. Change your old passwords, and finally prioritize taking the time to set up those two-factor authentications. Renew that antivirus protection and throw away those sticky password notes! You will thank yourself later!

Mobile banking safety tips.

If you are accessing your online account from a phone or tablet, protect yourself by treating your mobile device like a computer. That means:

  • Don't click on unsolicited links or download software from sources whose origin is not clear.
  • Only use apps from the credit union or bank, not third-party apps.
  • Be careful when mixing money, work, and fun. Smartphones shouldn't be used for visiting financial sites and visiting sites to download games. Often sites offering free games contain viruses that harvest personal or financial information from a smartphone.
